Horror Film locations

Locations used in horror films

The Location of a film is where scenes are set. Most films have a variety of different locations to link the storyline/scene to appropriate surroundings to create a realistic atmosphere. In horror films the location is an important factor to consider as it sets a scary scene.

Woods-

A common used location for shooting a horror film are the woods. This is because woods tend to be deserted , this helps to isolate a character. Stereotypical woods will include
Tall trees -which can block natural light and create spooky tree like shadows. This also creates a hiding place for characters .
Muddy surface-The surface of the woods usually has no pathways making it easy for a character to become lost . The muddy floor can contribute to a characters appearance ,if a character become distressed they become careless and get covered in mud (falling , leaning against a tree). The roots of trees  can also be used to trip a running victim leading to her death or disadvantage. Evil dead uses the woods to isolate a helpless victim.

Tunnels

Tunnels are a great place to film as they are hollow , this creates an echo of even the smallest of sounds, revealing a character hidden from view. In some cases the end of the tunnel is round the corner so there is no way of knowing what's at the en making a suspense building scene leading up to the end of the tunnel. Tunnels can be isolated , so bumping into a strange character can become immediately dangerous.

Towns

Deserted towns show there is a disturbance occurring. Towns are meant to be busy in everyday life so an empty town is unheard of .Towns are highly populated , having no one there is a strange experience for the audience creating tension. Silent hill uses this to hint the town is out of the ordinary.

Hotels

Hotels have multiple rooms which is great in horror films as it creates a wide range of hiding places for characters. Hotels give off the impression the characters are on holiday , this scares the audience as holidays are a relaxing get away or them. The obvious example is the shining as the hotel is empty other than the three characters.

Homes

Many horror films are set in homes, this is effective as the audience will live in similar surroundings, fearing everyday life. Homes have different ways of entering it, this can result in a characters being unaware of someone entering their home resulting in danger. Scream is set a home to show how vulnerable the victim is .

Hospitals

Hospitals in horror films will often leave victims powerless to anything happening around them especially if they are hospitalized. Hospitals can be scary in real life let alone horror movies as they are full of echoing corridors and screaming patients. Mental hospitals are similarly scary as they are full of potentially dangerous characters. When the staff are killed in Halloween the character is let hopeless.

Churches/Graveyards

The religious places are feared as the dead are buried beneath the surface. Churches can be linked to the devil and an inhuman prescience . These locations can be used to highlight the significance of spirits and possessions. Churches also have an echoing effect , enhancing small sounds . Graveyards can are usually associated with ghosts and zombies (the rising of the undead). This is a classic location , Frankenstein was partly filmed at a graveyard made the scene eerie and spooky.

Lakes/holiday cabins

Reflective lakes can be feared as there is no way of telling what's beneath the surface . The audience will assume there is something underwater. Cabins will often be isolated , leaving a character helpless .Horror films are set here as there is no help outside of the cabin making anyone a victim. This is similar to Friday 13th at crystal lake.

Conventions of film openings

Key conventions of film openings

A film opening  is created to excite and interest the audience , delivering a hook (sudden ending, keeping the audience interested). The opening will give hints into the storyline of the film and reveal the genre. It will usually last around two minutes .Although it doesn't seem long the opening  is responsible for gripping the audience . Film openings will usually include these key conventions:

Genre

The genre of the film will be established in the opening. This is done by adapting the mise en scene to suite specific needs of the film genre. Portraying the genre in the opening gives the audience and insight onto what the film will be about .The genre can be established through the:
Music-(light-hearted-comedy).
Lighting-(Dark , shadows-horror)
Costume-(combat clothes-action)
Set-(Isolated cabin-horror)
Props-(lasso-western)

Main Characters

If characters are included in a film opening they are most likely to be main characters. This means the character will be an important part of the film narrative. Main characters will often have some dialogue in the opening scene or have a focused appearance. The audience will able to identify key characters as they will have more focus than the extras who will have little focus.

Introduce pre-plot

Hints of the narrative are shown in the opening to give the audience a taster of the storyline .This will get the audience guessing or listing the possible significance of the opening scene in the later stages of the plot. keeping the audience engaged throughout in the film and paying attention to detail. The pre-plot can also be shown in a flash back in the opening scene to emphasis that scenes effect on the storyline.

Key credits

Key credits are the names of the most important people and contributors to the overall development of the film. This includes the production company. The credits make it obvious to the audience the film has started. The main names that are shown in the opening are:
-Director/producer
-Main actors/actresses
-Production names
-Features credits
-Screenplay
-Director of photography
-Film Editors
-Music by ...
-Associate producer
-Production designs
-Executive producer

Sound

Other than important dialogue, music is crucial in the opening of a film as it sets the scene. The music represents the genre and mood of the opening. The music determines whether the audience see the opening as happy ,sad or funny.

Shot types

The shot that is often used in an opening is a tracking shot (following a person or moving object). This emphasises the person/object being tracked and having an important role in the narrative. This is used in Forrest Gump to open and end the film by tracking the floating feather. Close up set the tone of the opening as they reveals the characters emotion/reaction towards the events in the opening scene . This helps the audience understand the mood set in the opening.

Production companies / Institutions

The Production company is usually stated at the beginning of the film before any clips are shown. This highlights the institution . Audiences who watch films by certain institutions will have trust in them and assume the film is good . The company logo may have a variation to set the scene, warner bros does this a lot to portray the genre of the film.

Scream Opening

 9 shot storyboard

Screen shot 1:Shows the title of the film "scream". The white bold font makes it stand out from the black background . The colours also represent the costume of the psycho. He wears a black cloak and a white screaming mask relating to the title.

Screen shot 2: Shows a young girl (damsel) at her home. She is at home and wearing white showing her vulnerability. She is talking on the phone with a smile on her face showing the conversation is going well (positive).

Screen shot 3: This sis an establishing shot revealing the location. This also conforms the time of day which is night time where most horror films are set. The large house on it's own isolates the character again showing her vulnerability.

Screen shot 4:The popcorn is shown rising on the stove creating tension. As the storyline gets scarier and more dangerous the popcorn get loader and rises more . Eventually when the psycho is in the home the popcorn sets on fire which represents danger.

This creates panic as the boy has a panicked face showing he is scared and in danger. The garden is covered in a mist covering any sight of the killer and creates a spooky atmosphere.

Screen shot 6:There is a dramatic difference in the girls expression as she is now hysterically crying showing fear and that she is scared for the safety of herself and her boyfriend. It is made clear the man on the phone is the psycho.

Screen shot 7: The boy is now shown covered in blood and lifeless. It is obvious he has been murdered and the girl is next.

Screen shot 8: The killer is shown smashing through a window, it is clear that he wants to kill the girl as he is aggressive. His costume is revealed here , this makes him look more sinister as his identity is hidden. This sudden smash through the window will make the audience jump.

Screen shot 9:The killer is shown chasing the victim and grabbing her. Help is nowhere as the house was shown isolated from others .He plunges the knife into her stomach killing her .

Instituition Logos

Warner bros Logo

The Warner bros logo has evolved a lot from when it was first made. In 1923 the logo was a very simple black and white shield like shape with the branded initials in the centre. This logo was used through 1923-1929 before being edited. This was nicknamed the "brain shield". In the top half of the shield was a photo of the exterior of their original studio building.

 Logo Variations

Logo Variations - Warner Bros. Pictures - CLG WikiThe warner bros logo has many variations personal to some of their film. They change certain parts of it to suite or specify the genre. This logo was adapted to suite the needs of the film My fair lady (1964).The logo is presented in a smart beige to make it look regal , this is emphasised by the Edwardian script giving an elegant Shakespearian presentation.

Logo Variations - CLG Wiki
One crazy summer (1986) firstly shows the normal logo but then turns into a cartoon drawing. The shield then opens revealing a pink bunny. This beginning relates to the crazy title and storyline. This suggests the film is a comedy. The film is about a teenage cartoonist again portrayed in the logo sequence.
In Lethal weapons four (1998)the warner bros logo starts of normal but then destroyed by a fireball this relates to the genre (action)
 .
The Scooby doo movie  (2002)completely changes the warner brothers logo to resemble Scooby's name tag. However it keeps many characteristic of the original logo. The bottom also reads "A mystery inc. Company " cleverly playing on the name of the company.
(2005) Constantine's film genre is shown immediately when the logo breaks apart . The dark and dull fiery tones and storming sky represents hell in which the film relates to. The whole shield and background have the same dark and reddish tones.
The festive spirit in Fred Claus (2008)is portrayed within moments when the logo is draped in Christmas lights. The shield itself is a silver like tree decorations. The snow shown falling is resting on the logo again showing the Christmas celebration.

    History of horror

                                              History of horror

Horror Films date back to the 1890's when films where black and white and special effects where non exsistant. Eventhough nowadays the films will seem ridiculous and non-scary , back in the day they where seen as terrifying. As audiences of the 1890's had never seen horror films and where not used to the bizarre story lines . It was not uncommon for audiences to faint in these movie theatres due to the suprise of horror.

    1896-Le manoir du diable

The first known horror film appeared in the silent shorts created by the film pioneer Georges melies in the late 1890s. The best known of these films was Le manoir du diable which  is seen as the first ever horror film. The title in french means : The house of devil . The film is only two minutes long btu has been seen as the birth of horror films.
The plot of the film involves satan, skeletons ,bats ,ghosts and witches which shows the peoples fears in the 1890's .

    Internationally film makers began to succesful and well knowncreate horror films , between the 1890's-1920's such as;
    -The Hunchback (1909)
-The Love of a Hunchback (1910)
    - Notre-Dame de Paris (1911)
    - The Golemn(1920)
    -Dr.Jekyll And Mr Hyde (1920)
    -Nosferatu (1922)
    -The monster (1923)
    -Waxworks (1924)
    -The Lost World (1925),
-The Phantom of the opera (1925)
    -After Midnight (1927)

Universal pictures had a big impact on horror film in the 1930's when they released a dark horror film series which became successful. This began a film spiral releasing one after the other. Popular films such as Frankenstein and Dracula . After this ,different ideas where introduced like The mummy (1932) introduced Egyptology , this added fear towards mummification. Another ,The wolf man (1941) introduced werewolf's into the horror genres. This has influenced more recent films such as The Mummy Returns and Dog soldiers(2002)

Towards the 1950's , horror films began to include more non-fictional and creative characters , like aliens , deadly mutations ,plants and insects. The creatures became more ridiculous and unknown , such as Godzilla . Films began to become more supernatural . Eventually films started to turn into the gore-shock zombie films similar to the ones we see today. One of the first "Night of the living dead" which frightened people in everyday life.

In the 1970's films such as the Exorcist (1973) involved possession and evil children that then became more popular . Storylines began to involve the devil possessing the most innocent of people. The 1960's counterculture influenced film which led to The Texas chainsaw massacre (1974) and The hills have eyes (1977).

The 1980's and 1990's had a huge impact on horror films as slasher films were released involving deadly phychos and vicious deaths . Popular slasher films that are popular today where made in the 1980's  like A nightmare on elm street (1984), Halloween (1978) and Candyman (1992). Up until present today films have become more realistic with special effects.

Throughout the years horror films have adapted to the viewers beliefs and the changes on the recent effects on society. In the past horror films  where based on the fantasies  and the creative minds of people . Whereas in present day there has been films based on true stories and disturbing ideas of many writers . Todays audience have made a higher demand for blood and sex and setting is mostly in towns and homes to make everyday scary. Sinister is one of the more disturbing resent films which involves a hanging scene in the first few seconds.

    Analaysis of the Happening

    The Happening

The title sequence  appears in a bold white font over the background . This is a worm's eye view of the sky, the clouds however are speeded up to look irregular as if something is happening out of the ordinary . This  foreshadows the panic that occurs later on in the film .The credits and  the  production company names fade in and out in the same font whilst the clouds speed up and get darker.

This moves onto a tracking shot of a man walking his dog which portrays a regular day. The camera is placed higher to make the dog look small and helpless . This also states the animals status. The eerie music sounds sinister and portrays the horror tone of the film.

The place and time is layered over the moving image , this alerts the audience that an occurance is about to happen .The establishing shot sets the scene as  the scenery is exposed . The crowd of people suggest a normal day at Centeral park , however the dark and gloomy weather suggets otherwise.

The two characters are shown exchanging friendly dialougue. The mid shot shows the body languge and facial expression of the character on the lefts reaction to something. Her face looks confused and shocked at what is happening. This shot also shows the other characters not reacting as if she is not affected.

The long shot of the still crowd shows that something supernatural is occuring . The male that the camera focuses on begins to walk backwards which looks extremely sinister and frightening.

The close up shows the expression on the characters face showing her emotion . The neutral face a lowered eyebrows show she is confused and unaware of the current goings on . It seems as if she is possesed as she mutters irrelevant dialougue.

The high angle shot looks down on the character , This shows she is inferior and powerless. The close up shows the hair pin is significant as the camera is focused on it slowly being pulled out of her hair. Her motion seems as if she is not in control.

The camera is focused on the character on the right as the character on the left is slightly out of focus but still her emotion and reaction is still visible to the audience. The character is close to the character so it focuses on her neck .  It is apparent that the focus on the pinand neck would result in what we see here.

    What is "suspense"

     What is suspense?

Suspense is a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen. This is used in Horror films to make the audience feel this way. It is effective in horror films as the audience should be unaware of what is going to happen so when it does it shocks and scare them.

     Music
Suspense is built up in many ways. Music is a an effective way of creating suspense as it changes to fit the scene from slow to fast. In classic movies a piano will be used to make suspenseful music. This may be done by starting of with a few simple keys and played slowly. At this point the audience know nothing is suddenly going to happen , however as soon as the keys get faster and more complex the audience are uncertain what is going to happen and when.
This background music is usually non-diegetic music , meaning the audience hear it but the on screen characters do not. This again makes the audience unsettled as they are preparing for the worst to happen whilst the character itself is unaware.
    Camera angles
The camera angles are an important factor in creating suspense as it shows the characters reactions and hidden elements. Close-up shots can be used to show the facial expression on the characters face
(fear) , This will have the same effect on the audience as they will relate to the character and fear for whats about to happen. Long shots can be used to show location and reveal hidden features that the audience may pick up on , such as a mask on a far off table or a character standing in the shadows. This creates suspense as they know more than the character and prepare themselves what may or may not happen. This is exciting yet terrifying.
    Lighting
Lighting is used in horror films as it makes the audience feel anxious as the shadow in the room may hide characters or weapons. This uncertainty of what is in the room is scary as the audience fear the unknown. This use of hiding characters in shadowed corners creates suspense as the audience have no way of knowing where on screen a character or object may be.
However the lighting does not have to just be dark to create suspense, flashing and blinking lights are often used to only show certain characters or objects at a time. This can be used to make a character get closer but hide there movement.

    Film Genres

                                              Film Genres

This film has done so well that there has been eight films and two remakes .The first film was made in 1978 and the most recent in 2008 . Michael Myers although staying the same has come a long way since then as horror films have changed and has a higher demand of blood ,sex and gore.

By leaving their human forms it made it easier for demons to enter their bodies . This confusing film is filled with terrifying music from Tiny Tim and scenes that will shock the audience . This is a "family fun" musical set back in the 60's when blacks where discriminated against . This film was  a great hit purely by the celebrity line up
    -John Travolta (past musical)
    -Zac efron (past musical)
    -Brittany snow (pitch perfect)
    -Amanda bynes
    -Queen latifa
